sugar paper

Here's my video fix for the week, and it incorporates all that I love about letterpress! It is an introductory video for Sugar Paper in Los Angeles. I love the sweeping shots of the piles of paper and envelopes, the spinning flywheel of a press, and the bright red spread of ink near the end. Artistry and love is truly in the details.

letterpress app

I love how technology is helping to spread the word about letterpress and the process behind it! Sure, most of the folks I encounter still need an explanation about what letterpress is, but we're making strides every day. Here's an awesome example of that with a letterpress app for the iPad! It uses a vintage Vandercook (like my press) and scans of real wooden type to print faux broadsides. Amazing. I can't wait to test it out.

I don't think I ever updated on my blog about what I've been up to with letterpress, but we just finished designing a wedding suite for a rustic western wedding at a ranch. I can't wait to photograph all the pieces and post them up. It was a great experience, and there's more ahead! Until then, enjoy the video.

linky loves: stationery

Loving me some paper goods today! Just thought I'd post some of my favorite images from stationery and design sites. I just took another letterpress class this past weekend, so this is very appropriate. More updates from that to come. Happy Wednesday, all!

live what you love

My dear sister-in-law gave me a teal letterpress print of the poster above, but here's a new edition in a lovely soft gray with a heart. Very inspirational, and reminds me of what really matters in life. Don't we want to incorporate our loves and passions into our daily lives?

I sure do. I want to live out my faith, my creativity, and so much more.

more affordable letterpress

Just read this great post on how to make letterpress more affordable - the tips are geared toward letterpress for wedding invitations, but it's great information nonetheless.

letterpress cards sale

One of my favorite letterpress shops is having an online sample sale that ends this Sunday! Just $10 for 10 different cards - a mix of their letterpress and offset printed loveliness. Isn't that awesome? Just $1 per card! The greatest part that it's always a surprise what you end up getting. I got 20 cards last time and had a variety of cards and envelopes I could use for every occasion.

Father's Day, new baby, new home, love, birthday, thinking of you, missing you, thank you and a whole bunch of whimsical ones that had blank insides so I could make my own message. So awesome - and it's a great compared to buying a $3 Hallmark card every time someone has a birthday. And unique too! Shop the sale here.

Watch their fun video and get a glimpse of the letterpress process.

cute and whimsical cards

I love letterpress and the whimsy of it when it is applied so simply. So these two card companies are just a hoot! Check out Paper Medium with their super cute illustrations and funny little creatures. I like the little pop of color and the witty sayings - in the second image it says "We raise this toast in honor of your birthday." Toast? Get it? :)

Salt & Syrup is from Stockholm, and they make cards with simple graphic shapes of animals - with the name of the animal in French, Swedish and English. Very sweet.

letterpress art

Letterpress is an art in itself, but I love when it is done as an actual art print. These lovely prints are available in limited editions at Sycamore Street Press. I love the whimsy and color combinations in both of these. Baby blue and red? Cute. And the blue and green gradient on the second print is beautiful and saturated.

a weekend of the greatest type

I fell ill last week at a conference I attended in Vegas - and this is the second time in a matter of weeks that I've gotten sick! :(
But that wasn't going to stop me from attending a class that I've been waiting to go to for 2 years! Whether it was scheduling conflicts or the class was full, I just haven't been able to make it. So Saturday was finally it. An intro to letterpress class at the San Francisco Center for the Book. And it was wonderful. We had our hands full with metal type and we set out to make a collaborative class book. Now I'm hooked! See the photos below:

And yes, I know San Francisco is spelled incorrectly. :)
